Completely natural bamboo how it's made into your loo roll

The UK is home to
67 million people.
Among us just a handful of people have challenged the status quo in an strategy to help reduce our demand for virgin wood to be converted into loo roll.
They have gone out to find sustainable bamboo plantations and test every batch to make sure what's in the pack is 100% Bamboo. - The proof is
here for people in the UK and
here for people in the USA.
The fact is we Brits are behind the loss of 6 million trees somewhere in the world every year - just for toilet roll. Not included in this figure is paper for kitchen rolls, facial wipes, napkins, nappies, feminine hygiene.
WHY BAMBOO?
Bamboo grows quickly, creates oxygen, captures carbon, and stabilises soil. Plus, it's super soft and absorbent—perfect for your 🍑! (courtesy of Bumboo)

The Humble Toilet Roll a Brief History
Oct 5, 2018
Estimates from the Statista Consumer Market Outlook show that the United States leads the way when it comes to the use of toilet paper. On average, an American can be expected to get through 141 rolls of loo paper every year, equating to roughly 12.7 kilograms. Not too far behind our friends in Germany flush 134 rolls down the toilet every year with the UK slightly less wasting 127 rolls of virgin wood.
November 21 2005 WWF Report
“Everyday about 270,000 trees are effectively flushed down the toilet or end up as garbage around the world, such a use of the forests is both wasteful and unnecessary,” said Duncan Pollard, Head of WWF's European Forest Programme. “Manufacturers must use more recycled fibres in their tissue products, as this means fewer trees will be cut down.”
Not a mention of bamboo! Fact: where virgin trees are cut down principally in Canada and Sweden, old, natural woodland has been lost and with it the home of flora, fauna and wildlife including invertebrates. It is a huge loss. New trees are fast growing species planted in an industrial scale.
Working on Reforestation
Bumboo say "In line with our vision to make forests abundant and protected, we are proud to have planted 77,369 trees in partnership with Eden Reforestation on 2023".
"We also proposed an amendment to our articles of association to acknowledge all of our stakeholders and our aim to create a positive impact on society and the environment, in line with B Corp guidelines".
The Eden Project IS making a difference
The Project reports: 'The heart of our mission is to see the communities we work with holistically transformed.
At each of our reforestation project sites, we start with a bottom-up approach. Our first connections are always with local communities, and our most important relationships are with local leaders, all of whom want a thriving local environment. Our role is to provide economic incentives and planting techniques to support them in restoring their local environment and economy in the ways they know to make sense.
Since we began our work in 2005, communities have gone from living under oppressive indentured servitude in degraded areas to receiving a living wage working to restore their local environment'.
Human Rights and Fair Labour Practices
Although Bumboo has concluded its four year relationship with the Eden Project the experience has culminated in a huge learning curve by investing in communities where reforestation is taking place.
Bumboo has taken this learning curve into their working relationship with the bamboo farmers. This is what they say: "Our bamboo is cultivated and harvested in Sichuan province. The FSC certified area comprises 35 villages with an estimated 55,000 bamboo farmers. We source from a combination of supplier companies (65%) and cooperatives (35%), with no single supplier accounting for more
than 5% of the total bamboo purchased",
"It is widely acknowledged that bamboo cultivation supports rural livelihoods and local economic development. Anecdotal evidence from our partner factory suggests that the income of tens of thousands of farmer households has been directly increased through our sourcing activities".
"We use internationally recognised ISO and BSCI standards to assess partner operations in China, where relying on third party inspections is necessary. These are carried out by reputable auditors, updated annually to provide consistent visibility into production facilities".
Conclusion: Preparing this review has given the staff at Naturally Sustainable a great deal of pleasure. As we construct each review we use our benchmarking skills of old to learn how and why sustainable companies are making the difference. We certainly applaud the people at Bumboo. As a B Corp they have trodden new ground and understand where they must go tomorrow.
