UK Citizens with a biometric passport can enjoy visa free travel to over 190 countries world wide. But without exception you will need to complete an online form advising your travel arrangements. Try to minimise the number of flights and hotels in your itinerary to reduce your C02 emissions during your stay.
The United States operates a Visa Waiver Program which allows citizens of qualifying countries, which includes the United Kingdom, to apply online using the official Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). The fee to complete the form is $21 per applicant. You do not need to pay anymore than the recognised fee to complete your ESTA.
ESTA provides a resource that checks your eligibility to travel to the United States by air, land or sea. Once you have completed the application you will be advised if you are eligible for travel to the US. It does not guarantee you entry into the country, that decision is made by the US Border Official at the point of entry, thus it is important to complete the online application in full and answer its questions fully and to the best of your knowledge.
Travel to the United States need to not be onerous, the CBP operate an Information Centre which offers 500 answers to policies and procedures. You are able to submit any question, query or concern on line or telephone the centre during working hours Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 5.00pm EST.
Planning to holiday in far away places is one of life's great pleasures.
Many of us travel overseas as part of our job. What can we do to help reduce CO2 created by aviation? The answer is take fewer flights, plan our itinerary to reduce our CO2 emissions. Managing our own carbon emissions will contribute to NET ZERO.

Flight Global's February 2023 News Report into Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) gives key insights into where the aviation industry is on its target to reach NET ZERO carbon output by 2050.
Blends of up to 50% recycled oils can be combined with petroleum based jet fuel. Described as a 'drop-in' replacement for standard common jet fuel, airlines all over the world are pledging to dramatically reduce carbon emissions. US based GE Aerospace states that aero-engines and airframes are already certified to accept SAF.
The problem is not so much technical as one of cost. Recycled oils or synthetic options are expensive. United Airlines, a proactive user of SAF, states that it is one of the most scalable decarbonisation solutions. The airline invites customers to contribute to its 'Sustainable Flight Fund' in a positive step to generate more capacity to help reduce the costs of SAF.
World's first net zero transatlantic flight powered by Rolls Royce 1000 engines(source: RR Trent Engines)
Across the Atlantic in the United Kingdom Rolls Royce Trent Engines and Virgin Atlantic have joined forces in a UK Government sponsored proving flight.
In 2023, one of Virgin Atlantic’s flagship Boeing 787s, powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines, took off from London Heathrow and made the journey to New York’s John F Kennedy Airport – a journey made by thousands of people for business, family, and leisure every week. But this was no ordinary journey.
When fully replacing kerosene, SAF can slash lifecycle carbon emissions by more than 70% compared to conventional fossil jet fuel. This flight was fuelled by SAF made primarily from waste oils and fats, such as used cooking oil. The use of 100% SAF on the flight, combined with carbon removal through biochar credits – a material which traps and stores carbon taken from the atmosphere – will make the flight net zero.
Every major airlines is already committed to SAF. A growing number are turning to their customers to help generate economies of scale that will help bring 100% 'drop-in' SAF sooner than later.
